Introduction
UL 9540A is a testing procedure that evaluates and documents the fire performance of stationary ESS and was introduced as a compulsory requirement for all residential systems intended for installation in indoor locations as part of UL 9540 Ed. 2. The tests performed put the ESS through extreme abuse conditions that evaluate the fire and explosion hazard characteristics of the ESS. The test data is used to demonstrate ESS performance when applying for existing exceptions in the fire code to reduce location setback restrictions. Manufacturers may use cell and module-level results when comparing, and selecting, these components for use in an ESS unit.
Lithium Battery Extreme Explosion Chamber is a testing chamber specifically designed for lithium battery cells. It is used to evaluate various parameters and characteristics of the batteries, including battery temperature, voltage, gas volume, gas generation rate, and thermal runaway initiation temperature.

The Extreme Explosion Chamber consists of:

Pressure vessel, anti-corrosion steel made, with an internal volume of 82 liters.

The pressure vessel can withstand a maximum of 3MPa (435 PSI) explosion pressure while configured with an explosion relief valve for safety.

The explosion relief valve for automatic relief exceeds pressure when reaching 80% of the maximum limits.

Equipped with a sampling port for gas sampling, with a ball valve to control the opening/close.

With a sampling gas filtering device at the outlet, a filtering rate not less than 0.5 microns;

Vessel door lock device, if the vessel has internal pressure, the door can not be opened to protect the operator.

With observation window on the test vessel.

Atmospheric gas replenishment device to replenish the chamber with specific atmospheric gas (normally N2).

A thermal runaway trigger system, which can set thermal runaway conditions such as heating film, short circuit, overcharge, and discharge.

The heating element can heat at a specific rate up to 200°C, with an adjustable heating rate of 4 to 7°C per min.

With a vacuum pump, the capacity is not less than 2 liters per min.

Up to 8 simultaneous temperature data acquisition circuits, with a resolution of 0.1°C.

The temperature measurement system, which measures temperature changes within the chamber and can measure temperature changes at specific locations on the test vessel.
